I started having dreams about cherries, so I went out and bought a fresh, ripe bag, never having eaten them before. Now they’re my favorite fruit, and I long for the summer season so I can enjoy them. Longing for something we can’t have...it’s a typical human condition. The poem I wrote for this piece is about learning to love yourself, how life can be sweet and also a little sour, just like cherries.

CHERRY
I celebrate the way I was made
by the hands of my Maker
each crack and fissure
each wayward fold of skin
the curves of my mind
my loud, barking laugh
the fire that burns behind my eyes
the growing love I keep hidden in my chest
It’s all just a cherry on top
a sweet wink of knowing
that I was made for this
and I was made for now
and even my asymmetrical smile
it has purpose too
